Erin Johansen (MonkeyGirl)

Erin (a.k.a. monkeygirl), M10K's poetry editor, likes monkeys. A lot. She wants to be one when she grows up.

When she isn't spending time grooming and foraging, she is sometimes spotted as the editor of GirlChick.com, a sassy, evocative third-wave feminist webzine. Erin produced ForWord Girls, the first national women's spoken word festival, with a group of San Francisco poets in September 2002. She currently hosts Poetry Mission, an open mic poetry event in San Francisco, and performs around the city. A former journalist turned geek grrl, Erin also likes guacamole. A lot. She says to send her avocados.

FROZEN PEAS
Last night, without thinking,
I left out the frozen peas.
Extra Large Super Value Pack,
sitting there on the counter,
only half gone, soggy.

HOW NOT TO BE A NICE GIRL
Let your fingers do the walking
they said on that television
commercial

my mother said, "nice girls
don't touch themselves
down there." >>>

ON RELATIONSHIPS
Last night my best friend told me
that women like to change men.
They like to feed them, clothe them,
change their bad habits like dirty diapers.
Bring them to their full breasts
to feed and coo and suckle
till there's nothing left but a dry tit
and a broken relationship.

SOBRIETY
Three years since
I last saw your face,
the back of your head
as you descended the stairs
from my tiny apartment. >>>
