Friction Zone

There are elephants standing in the bushes at the 22nd Street CalTrain station. I saw them there, along with a crust of stale bread, and a single crow’s feather.

They watch cautiously as the station slowly fills with noises: Clattering staccato wing flaps. The orange rumble of an engine. Unseen drunken bellows.

and do not move or startle,

even when the angry train appears.
